The creators of Bleak Faith: Forsaken have been accused of stealing Elden Ring animations. However, they are probably not responsible for the situation.
It’s been a busy few days for Archangel Studios, developers of action-RPG Bleak Faith: Forsaken. The game’s launch last week turned out to be a disappointment, and now the developers have been accused of stealing animations from Elden Ring.
- The case was detected by a fan passing through the handle. meowwho noticed that some of the animations in sinister faith are identical to those of old ring.
- Meowmaritus was even more upset with the whole situation as he is the author of FromSoftware’s modding tools and suspects that one of them called DS Anim Studio may have been used to extract specific animations from Elden Ring.
- You can see the comparison below. The footage leaves no doubt that this is the same attack animation. You can also find other examples on Reddit.
Is it really a theft?
However, most likely, the case is much more complicated. Archangel Studios claims that it did not copy the animation from Elden Ring. The team is only three people and develop a ladder game sinister faith developers had to rely heavily on items purchased from the Unreal Engine Marketplace. This is where the animations come from.
- This explanation seems likely, so there are two possibilities. Either FromSoftware also bought the same set of animations, or the person who sold the animations took them from Elden Ring without permission from the Japanese studio.
- If the latter is true (which is much more likely), the folks at Archangel Studios believe that this may not have happened by extracting the animations directly from the Elden Ring files. Instead, the Unreal Engine Marketplace package author may have copied these animations using a technique called rotoscoping. Such a solution would have made the question less clear from a legal point of view.
Let’s remember that Bleak Faith: Forsaken debuted last Friday. The game is only available on PC. The game received a cold reception, but since launch day it has slowly but surely improved. A day after its release, only 58% of gamer reviews on Steam were praising the title, while at the time of writing it’s 64%.
