Game Freak, developer of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, stressed the importance of making more games outside of the Pokemon series.
Masao Taya, the director of Game Freak’s latest release, Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On, recently spoke to Axios (opens in a new tab) about the studio, explaining, “We think it’s very important for the studio to continue to create and release titles outside of the Pokémon series.” The director continues, “In recent years, the resources required for game development have grown steadily, so Development Department One has tried a style of development where it works with external studios.”
If you didn’t know, Game Freak is best known for developing many Pokémon series games, including Pokémon Emerald, Pokémon Gold and Silver, Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee, and many more. However, in addition to Nintendo’s monster collecting games, Game Freak is also behind the Pocket Card Jockey series, the latest of which has just been released via Apple Arcade, as well as Nintendo’s Giga Wrecker Alt Switch game.
In the same Axios interview, Taya revealed that the studio isn’t planning on announcing any new games just yet, but that we should at least expect to see more Pocket Card Jockey: “Some of the feedback we got been that the game is too difficult, so I would like us to carefully adjust the balance in the future. We are also planning other updates, but at this stage I cannot reveal any details yet.”
Game Freak isn’t the only developer known for making Pokémon games, Nintendo has also used ILCA, the studio behind Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl remakes, as well as Creatures, which brought us Detective Pikachu, as well as a range of other 3DS and mobile games for the series, and a range of other studios to bring more Pokemon games to the world.
