The Deadites are back! This time we don’t have terrified teenagers in a cabin in the woods, but with a distant family. The reunion of two sisters who had ceased to have a relationship does not last long, as the son of the eldest reunites with the Necronomicon. As he turns the pages of his death, a demon comes to life in the apartment and the slaughter begins. The only way to survive is to stick together, but that proves very difficult when the demon keeps coming up with new ways to tear the vulnerable family apart.
Evil Dead Rise is a remake of Sam Raimi’s cult classic horror films, and it works great as a sequel, because the premise is just as simple as before: an unstoppable, unspeakable demon terrorizes all characters until it is time to die. angry and pull out the chainsaw. In this title, they use all kinds of tools, from very sharp propellers to rusty graters. After watching it, you feel like you’re covered in blood, guts, and brains. It’s riddled with gory shots, and often when you have time to look into the goofy scenes, you can’t help but wonder why they’ve dragged on for so long. In any case, I am demanding, because he has a very good rhythm, intensity and concentration. Lee Cronin’s storytelling skills are as precise as the many tools used to dismember bodies. Cronin rips the pattern that has been followed so far in the saga and assembles new members and ingredients that manage to capture Sam Raimi’s characteristic style and add his own unique touch that sets him apart as a director. For example, the scene where the massacre is seen through a peephole, with a kind of perspective that leaves the most gruesome details within reach of your imagination.
It’s very exciting to be able to watch a film that you don’t always know what’s going to happen. Hollywood often features very young characters that you know are going to survive to the end. In this film? Don’t be so sure. Admittedly, it’s easy to guess what the ending will look like and I wish the directors had played more with the apartment and its inhabitants, but it’s still entertaining and makes good use of the claustrophobic space. It’s wonderfully evil and wicked, just the way gore fans love it. The biggest benefit of the film is having Alyssa Sutherland in the cast, as her terrifying role as a possessed mother is played fantastically and she manages to capture the viewer’s attention in every scene where her demonic face with huge eyes appears.
It would have been very easy for the directors to exclusively draw inspiration from the more characteristic Evil Dead themes and motifs, like the chainsaw that appears at the end, but Cronin’s strategy of centering the terror around a small family works. very well and creates a good starting point for releasing more Evil Dead wicked content in the future. It may not be as grotesque as 2013’s (pretty mediocre, by the way) or as wonderfully bizarre as Raimi’s saga, but it has a good balance of drama, dark humor and violence that blends well. with horror. Evil Dead Rise isn’t terribly innovative horror, but that doesn’t stop it from reviving the saga’s splendor with its gory mayhem. After watching this movie, you’ll feel like you’ve been bathed in blood, sticky brains and cranial fragments. Being the Evil Dead saga is quite a compliment.
