With Elden Ring’s anniversary fast approaching, talk of potential DLC for FromSoftware’s open-world game is more important than ever. But what about all the other Soulslikes in development? They’re sure to quench their hunger for more genre, and a Lords of the Fallen dev has now noted that when Elden Ring first came out, they realized they accidentally had a lot of the same ideas as FromSoftware. .
The developer in question is HexWorks, which is working on The Lords of The Fallen sequel/reboot, a sequel to 2014’s Lords of The Fallen, misnamed Lords of The Fallen. HexWorks didn’t do anything wrong here, it just seems like a rather unfortunate case of parallel thinking that had the team face to face when the Elden Ring was revealed.
“Our breakthrough weapon, the Flail, was shown in the Elden Ring trailer, and it killed us from the inside out,” says Cezar Virtosu, Creative Director of The Lords of The Fallen. “And we saw that one of our bosses was almost identical to Malenia,” he adds, which must have really kicked in the teeth.
While the coincidences are certainly unfortunate, HexWorks seems to have taken it to heart, even though Elden Ring has created specific expectations for The Lords of The Fallen. “There is some pressure, as you can imagine,” Virtosu told Edge (via GamesRadar). “People asked, ‘Do you have horse fights? Do you have an open world? ‘”
While that’s not the kind of pressure and expectation that RPG developers want, as it compares to the success of a studio like FromSoftware and Elden Ring, Virtosu reckons HexWorks wouldn’t even make The Lords of The Fallen. right now if not for the popularization of Soulslike.
“Miyazaki is our father and our grandfather. Without him, we wouldn’t have a job,” says Virtosu. Virtosu even recently apologized for Marvel’s Avengers, when he ran one of the game’s co-development studios live.
