With the recently released patch installed, players can now experience the old ring PS5 ray tracing mode. While the added visual flair was expected to have a negative impact on performance, the addition of RT comes at a higher cost than many would have imagined. Enabling ray tracing on PS5 sometimes causes the frame rate to drop below 30 FPS.
Elden Ring PS5’s ray tracing is “far from ideal”
As Digital Foundry explains in the video embedded below, enabling ray tracing in Elden Ring results in an average drop of 15-20 FPS. The mode also reduces the resolution, resulting in a less sharp image.
The drop in frame rate drops the game below the PS5’s VRR window, which means even the latest TV tech can’t help with performance issues. Also, with drops below 30 FPS, even a frame rate cap can’t solve the problem.
Following their analysis, Digital Foundry concludes that ray tracing on PS5 is “less than ideal”, but not surprising, as “it’s the price you’d expect to pay for additional visual features layered on top of an experience. already mediocre.” 60FPS. ” ”
Elden Ring is a game where inconsistent performance can mean the difference between life and death, so I imagine most gamers will be looking to disable ray tracing, at least for combat sequences.
Hopefully FromSoftware’s next game, which they’ve been working on since 2022, doesn’t have these performance issues.
