The franchise’s latest installment, Battlefield 2042, lacked any sort of single-player campaign and was poorly received by fans. At the time of release, the game lacked many core franchise features.
The lack of effort took its toll, with EA refusing to release Battlefield 2042 sales numbers at investor meetings after release. The past few years have been tough for the franchise, once considered Call of Duty’s main competitor.
Now, the news that EA DICE is creating a new single-player team comes from GamesIndustry.biz, and it also states that this team is being created in support of Ridgeline Games.
With input from Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto, Ridgeline Games was formed in late 2022 to create a new narrative campaign set in the Battlefield universe. This represents a huge shift in direction for the franchise, whose forte is large-scale multiplayer action.
Even recent games that have featured campaigns, like Battlefield 5, have only featured small, episodic single-player games, with multiplayer receiving the most attention from its developers.
