The first option players will find in Wild Hearts is to pet or kill a Kemono. Like many aspects of Wild Hearts, the kill or kill mechanic is obtuse, not explaining what each option might do. Kemono is the term used in-game for the wildlife and monster bosses that roam each open-world environment. This guide will walk you through the difference between choosing to fart or kill in Wild Hearts.

What happens when you pet and kill Kemono in Wild Hearts?
During the tutorial’s opening sequence, you’ll hunt an endemic Kemono through the forest. After a short combat sequence, you’ll receive a brief guide on how to crouch and use stealth. You have the choice to pet or kill as you get closer to the deer. You are free to choose any option, and Wild Hearts never explains if there is a difference. Choosing to pet or kill Kemono will grant you different crafting materials, some of which are unique to each option. You can’t pet the giant Kemono you’re fighting, so don’t hurt yourself trying.

Wild Hearts offers a large number of materials and crafting parts that you can obtain from bosses and endemic Kemono such as deer, wolves and other small animals. You can pet every little Kemono in the game, which will cause them to drop materials on you. You can also kill these beasts and finish them off to get a different material.
Earning materials is how you’ll build all of your armor and weapons in Wild Hearts, and since resources are scarce, we suggest consulting the Cyclopedia to determine whether you should pet or kill every Kemono you encounter. On rare occasions, you can do both. You should try to crouch down and get close to wildlife as much as possible, which will allow you to pet it. After petting the creature, try to kill it as quickly as possible. This may sound mean, but doing so will allow you to enjoy the benefits of both options. Wild Hearts will track how many times you’ve petted or killed each creature.

Once you reach Minato, you can receive rewards that require you to pet or kill a certain number of enemies. You can also access the info tab in the menu to see each little Kemono and what they will drop if you pet or kill them. Take advantage of both options to craft strong armor and weapons for the giant Kemono waiting for you.
