The Blizzcon 2021 is practically in the starting blocks. Friday evening, February 19th, the grand opening show begins with Blizzard’s key announcements for the years to come.

Much is already rumored – for example about the ominous Project Fenway, Blizzard’s supposedly big new reveal. But a remaster for Diablo 2 is also firmly in the program.

That claims the reliable leaker Kaiser499, who at that time correctly predicted Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2. It is not yet known whether Diablo 2 Resurrected is Project Fenway.

Remaster or Remake?

As early as January 2021, there were solid rumors about Diablo 2 Resurrected: Allegedly, after the release disaster of Warcraft 3 Reforged, the original Blizzard team was withdrawn from Diablo 2 in order to put the developers of the excellent Tony Hawk remake on the project.

But in the meantime this team has been merged with Blizzard, meanwhile should almost 200 people are working on Diablo 2 Resurrected.

It is still unclear whether the “Resurrected” is a remake or a remaster. The difference is anything but trivial: In a remaster, the old technology would only be adapted to modern computers and superficially spruced up.

Given how alive Diablo 2 is thanks to the fans 20 years later, we think that’s pretty unlikely. A real remake would be a completely newly developed game such as the Definitive Edition of Mafia 1.
