Ninja Theory has released a new video that shows off the process of creating the world we’ll explore in Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II is one of the biggest upcoming games from Microsoft. Ninja Theory, the studio responsible for this, shares very little new information, so any material dedicated to this project is greatly appreciated. The latest video is the first in a series that shows behind the scenes of the production.

  1. The first episode of the series focuses on showcasing the process of creating virtual Iceland, where the story will take place. In order to faithfully reproduce the island, the developers personally went there and got a ton of useful materials for work. The developers had access to topographic data, but it turned out to be very crude. Therefore, drones were used to obtain much more precise measurements.
  2. The developers’ plans were somewhat thwarted by the pandemic, preventing them from freely traveling around Iceland for a while. So they called on photographer Chris Lund, based in Reykjavik. He researched interesting places and helped plan drone flights, taking into account, for example, changing lighting or wind.
  3. All data and materials obtained this way had to be changed accordingly, to reflect the state of the island since the 10th century, when the story of Senua takes place. The developers have put a lot of effort into ensuring that the game accurately reflects the reality of this historical period. During the works, among other things, photogrammetry technology was used to take three-dimensional photos of places and objects, which were then transformed into game models.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II is coming to PC, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X. The developers aren’t ready to give an expected release date at this time.
