It’s quite interesting how the Crimson Desert has changed. In 2019 it was announced as an MMORPG in the universe of Black Desert Online. At the end of 2020, there was a new presentation, this time as an open world game with a single player focus. The developers of Pearl Abyss have now said a little more about the multiplayer mode, which has been a bit confusing for players so far.
Two playable heroes in one RPG
It is said that the multiplayer part should be organically integrated into the single player part and not be a separate mode – but it will still be completely optional. It should be a special gaming experience that differs from that of an MMORPG. “Of course those who want to experience a pure single-player game can do so too,” said Pearl Abyss.
You take on the role of the mercenary MacDuff, who will be a predetermined character. With him you will experience the single-player story. For the multiplayer part you then create your own, additional character. “MacDuff’s cosmetic appearance can be changed depending on the equipment, but his face is not customizable to convey the story more naturally,” the developers explain. “In addition to the main story, however, you can create a separate character in Another Journey (tentative name). If you do, you will be able to change the appearance of that character using Pearl Abyss’ advanced customization system.”
This means that you play two characters in Crimson Desert: MacDuff, with whom you experience the single-player story, and a specially created hero who will be on the road in the multiplayer part. Presumably this is a mercenary from MacDuff’s troops, whom you then play from time to time in order to experience multiplayer elements, if you want to. Crimson Desert is slated for release for PC, Xbox Series X / S and PS5 at the end of the year.
