Much attention has been paid to the release of Crime Boss: Rockay City since the payday shooter was first announced, but sadly, it just doesn’t seem to live up to the hype, at least not yet.
The game finally made its way to PC earlier this week, and reviews have been pretty lackluster so far, averaging 55 on Metacritic at the time of writing, based on reviews from nine critics. Here’s a look at what some of them had to say:
“Crime Boss Rockay City is a production with several critical issues, both purely technically and in the situational variety the package offers. (Apart from) these flaws, however, the (game) achieves the goal. to embody the spirit of the cinematographic genre from which it is inspired, also thanks to the well-known actors of its distribution.
The whole thing is clearly a loving homage to the glory days of ’90s action movies, but the muted execution misses the mark. But how long can that hold your attention when your multiplayer gaming time is much better spent elsewhere?
“In its present state, Crime Boss: Rockay City It sounds like a low-level wannabe criminal trying to get rich quick on a street full of multiplayer shooters who are already doing better.
“Overall, Crime Boss is a game at war with itself. All three modes offer something, but none of them do their thing quite as well. Meanwhile, the characters and writing surrounding these missions feel painfully stuck in 2011. And customization is limited or randomized in a way that makes it feel like you’re never in control of your gear.
“I’m not going to envy Dannys pension, both Glover and Trejo. I just can’t fathom the decisions that went into creating Crime Boss: Rockay City. Payday 3 is due out later this year.”
Of course, the silver lining here is that Crime Boss: Rockay City won’t be coming to Xbox until later in 2023, so the development team has time to polish the game in the coming months ahead of its console release.
The question is, can you convert some of those overhaul points and attract a healthy playerbase by then? We’ll have to wait and see how popular it proves to be on PC over the next few months… it’s definitely not the best of debuts.
