Civilization 6 brings completely new game mechanics with an update.

The developer of Civilization 6 recently announced that the barbarians will soon play a much more important role in the turn-based strategy game. Now the update is here and it brings numerous other changes with it.

What can the barbarians do?

The new game mode “Barbarian Clans” exchanges the barbarian peoples for clans that act much more like their own faction. They prefer a certain terrain and tactics. In total you can meet seven different clans:

  • Flatland Clan: Build his outposts far from forests and hills. In combat, they rely on melee units for attack and ranged combat for defense.
  • Woodland Clan: You can always find outposts of the Woodland Clan near forests or rainforests. In attack as well as in defense, these close and long-range fighters use, but concentrate more on the latter.
  • Hills Clan: The Hills Clan prefers to build on hills or open terrain. Your favorite units are melee fighters.
  • Rover Clan: Need a field with horses near them and settle far away from forests. As a result, they mainly focus on recruiting mounted units.
  • Chariot Clan: The Chariot Clan can be found near horses in the desert. They mainly rely on horse-drawn carriages and light cavalry. They almost completely ignore ranged combat.
  • Jungle Clan: You meet this clan in the rainforest near Ivory. Your units are a balanced mix of melee and ranged fighters, as well as mounted and unmounted fighters.
  • Seafaring Clan: Can be found on the coast and defend their outposts from land with light anti-cavalry as well as close and long-range fighters on the high seas.

Another great feature is that you are stronger interact with them can. Not only are there new aggressive approaches, you can also go diplomacy with the barbarians.

  • Hire Clan: You will receive one of the best units the clan can currently train in exchange for gold. In addition, the clan is slowly developing into a city-state.
  • Ransom Unit from Clan: Buy back a civilian unit for gold from the clan, which thereby gains progress on its development as a city-state.
  • Bribe Clan: The clan withdraws its units from your area for a few rounds. Also gives the clan progress towards becoming a city-state.
  • Prompt Clan: Hire the clan to attack another faction and help them develop into a city-state.
  • Disperse Clan: If one of your units enters a clan outpost, you can completely destroy it.
  • Raid Clan: Instead of destroying a clan, you can pillage it. It loses progress in its development to a city-state and you get gold.

Leader Pools: The second big change in the update is that you can create two different pools of leaders for your single and multiplayer matches. So you can determine from which leaders your fellow players can choose and which the AI opponents can use.

There are also a number of balancing adjustments. For example, computer-controlled opponents will build air units more often in the future and will also concentrate more on air defense. A full list of changes can be found on page 2.

Civilization 6 gaming history

The first part of the Civilization series appeared in 1991. The players remembered it mainly because of Gandhi. Because the otherwise peace-loving ruler had a tendency to resort to nuclear weapons in the game.

For decades, fans thought it was a bug. But in 2020 the creator Sid Meier spoke up personally and stated: It was all intentional!

Civilization 6 itself was released back in 2016, but it’s still the newest installment in the series. However, the game received a few expansions and finally even a Season Pass in 2020. In addition, you can not only play it on your PC, but also on your smartphone. It’s not the only PC game that made that leap, however. We have compiled a list of the best such titles.
