Kerbal Space Program 2 is here and ready to let you venture into the farthest corners of space. You will need considerable hardware to run the game properly as the hardware requirements are high. If you have a desktop computer, you may be able to modify the components to make it work properly. But what if you had a device whose hardware can’t be changed, like a Steam Deck?
Running Kerbal Space Program 2 on anything other than the most powerful hardware is difficult, and some players feel like the game crashed on startup. The Steam Deck is capable of running Kerbal Space Program 2, but getting there will take some extra effort.
How to play Kerbal Space Program 2 on Steam Deck?
Kerbal Space Program 2 has a private division launcher, which you have to go through to play. It is possible to skip the launcher, and you must do so to play it on the Steam Deck. Here are the steps you need to follow:
- Open the Kerbal Space Program 2 folder in Steam. It’s usually located in C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon, but you need to find where you installed Steam on your computer.
- Find the PDLauncher folder inside, then create a new text file. The text file should contain “start ..KSP2_x64.exe %command%” (without quotes).
- Change the extension of the text file to “.bat” (without quotes). Please enable the feature in Windows Explorer if you don’t see the default extensions.
- Go to your Steam library and open the properties of the Kerbal Space 2 program. You should look at the general settings.
- In the Boot Options box, add “
.bat %command%” (without quotes), being whatever name you gave the text file.
If done correctly, you can bypass the launcher and launch the game on the Steam Deck. However, this may not always work and may need to be configured multiple times if it does not work. It also does not take into account the hardware requirements of Kerbal Space Program 2, which the Steam Deck may not meet. Graphics settings may need to be adjusted to improve performance.
Until fixes and workarounds are made as the game progresses in Early Access, this is your best bet for playing Kerbal Space Program 2 on the Steam Deck.
