Battlefield 2042 has turned out to be one of the biggest flops of recent years. Since its release, the game, which was actually eagerly awaited, has repeatedly set negative records. Today, Battlefield 2042 has so few players on PC that even 2016’s Battlefield 1 has completely overtaken it!
Battlefield 2042
Since its release late last year, it’s clear that Battlefield 2042 hasn’t been the hit that DICE and EA were hoping for. The futuristic military shooter has been plagued with bugs and server issues since its release, which in turn has led to negative reviews, dissatisfied fans and a rapidly dwindling player base.
Earlier this month, player counts on Steam indicated that Battlefield 2042 players were slowly abandoning the game. Instead, they seemed to be returning to 2018’s Battlefield V as the World War II shooter’s numbers started to rise, even surpassing the latest installment at times.
player numbers
A look at SteamDB confirms that the numbers for Battlefield 2042 haven’t gotten much better even in the middle of the month. At the time of writing, the 24-hour peak concurrent active player for the current Battlefield is just under 2,900 players. That’s 10 times fewer than Battlefield V’s 28,000 or so. But even compared to Battlefield 1, the numbers speak for themselves. The current peak there is almost 10,000 players!
There’s no glossing over it: that’s a bad image for a game that was only released a few months ago. Also a sign that DICE needs to do something fast if it wants to win players back.
A sharp drop in player numbers isn’t all that Battlefield 2042 is currently struggling with. Late last week, a disgruntled fan started a petition demanding that EA offer a full refund for the shooter across all platforms. In just a few days, this petition has already collected almost 200,000 signatures. It will be interesting to see how this disaster continues.
