Another update for the military FPS game Battlefield 2042 is coming next week. Update 3.2.1 includes the rollback of the “stealth” changes made to the drum and extended magazines in the last patch, but also some major changes launchers. Specifically, Battlefield 2042’s tracker dart gun is getting a huge nerf.
The Tracer Dart Gun has been featured in several Battlefield games and works in conjunction with blasters by firing a radio transponder tag that attaches to anything it touches. This transponder functions as a stationary target for guided missiles fired from launchers like the recoilless M5 and FGM-148 Javelin.
In many situations this is even much more useful than SOFLAM’s targeting scope, as the tracer dart sticks to the target for a time and can be used on non-vehicular targets, especially infantry. Mark a sniper nest with a tracer dart, and chances are someone nearby with an M5 ready will send you a nice explosive care package.
Patch 3.2.1 significantly cuts the Tracer Dart Gun wings. The upgrade reduces the projectile speed of darts from 500m/s to 250m/s and adds bullet drop. These darts will travel half as fast and fall to the ground as they do. If that wasn’t enough, the darts active time has been reduced from a full 40 seconds (which is admittedly a long time) to just 12 seconds.
Additionally, the FGM-148 Javelin will not be able to connect to homing dart transponders without direct line of sight once the update is performed.
EA/DICE says the changes are aimed at increasing the skills required to successfully use the tracer dart at long range, and that SOFLAM is another option if that’s what you plan on doing. However, as mentioned above, SOFLAM only works to designate targets from aircraft or ground vehicles, so those dismounted reconnaissance scouts will be able to breathe a little easier.
The developer says the update is expected to roll out between February 13 and 17, but hasn’t specified an exact date yet.
