Microsoft

In a sudden twist, Microsoft announced that they had reversed their decision to increase the monthly fee for Xbox Live Gold. The original decision, taken earlier on the same day, would have increased the monthly fee by 82 cents and the three-month fee by 4.11 euros. However, these price changes would not have had any effect on existing subscribers.

The reason for the price increase was that Microsoft regularly reviews the value and pricing of the services it offers to take account of changes in regional markets and to continue investing in the Xbox community: “We will be making price adjustments for Xbox Live Gold in selected markets . In many markets, the price of Xbox Live Gold has not changed in years, and in some markets it has not changed in over 10 years. ”

Microsoft statement

The news of the reversal came pretty quickly as Microsoft apparently received a lot of criticism for the decision. “We screwed up today and you were right to let us know,” the blog post on the Xbox website said.

“Connecting with friends and playing with them is an important part of gaming and we have failed to meet the expectations of the players who rely on it every day. For this reason we decided not to change the prices for Xbox Live Gold. ”

No changes to the subscription

In addition to making the decision to reverse the price increase, Microsoft also said that you no longer need an Xbox Live Gold account to play free-to-play games on your console.

“We’re taking this moment as an opportunity to bring Xbox Live more in line with how we see the gamer at the center of their experience,” the post continued. This change will take effect in the coming months.

So in summary, there will be no price increase whether you have a new or an existing subscription to the Xbox Live Gold service.
