A new interview from Sega sheds a little more light on the concepts and characters they drive. 404 Game RE:SET How to Play Announced in early February 2023, the game is a collaboration between Sega and Deny creator of the Toko Taro series. The interview reveals more details about what players will actually do in the game and how they will interact with some of the previously introduced characters. (THANKS, 4player!)
The new interview features comments from Gosuke Nakamura, the game’s producer. As described above 404 Game RE:SET the game involves classic Sega games reimagined as humanoid characters. These anthropomorphizations (also called “gijinka”) actually take two forms: Type: Anode and Type: Cathode. Each type has a different personality which can best be summarized by “light side” and “dark side”. The Anode (the “Light” side) builds were introduced in a previous reveal. Cathode’s “dark” side personalities emerged as a result of Sega’s actions, which is why Sega is depicted as the antagonistic faction of 404 RE:SET game. The cast members are initially “cathodized” by Sega and use their powers to negatively affect the world around them. For example, Exceed Type: Cathode runs wild through cities, taking advantage of his speed no matter how dangerous he poses to innocent people. A screenshot shows Exceed Type: Cathode interacting with another character named Ribbon.
In 404 Game RE:SET How to Play Players will infiltrate Sega’s servers, posing as Sega employees. The game’s in-game features are based on Sega’s organizational structure. PVP matches take place in the “Director’s Arena” in front of Sega’s board members. Guild members in the single player game are your colleagues in the same section. In terms of actual mechanics, the game combines RPG progression with scrolling shooters. To summarize, Nakamura described the game as an “RPG shooter where you purify girls who have fallen to the dark side”.
Sega has also released character art for Type: Cathode incarnations of Outrun, Afterburner, Virtua Cop, Virtua Fighter, there fantasy zone. They are voiced by the same players who voice their stripped-down versions of Type: Anode.
404 Game Re: Define is under development for release on iOS and Android devices. It will be released in spring 2023 in Japan. An international release has yet to be confirmed.
