Hollywood often takes advantage of the most popular gaming brands. It happened in the case of Super Mario, Tomb Raider or, more recently, Uncharted. But there are still plenty of other titles with huge potential waiting to be made into movies.

What greatly complicates the issue of turning games into movies are mainly two things: copyright and toxic fans who often don’t understand that it’s impossible to translate their favorite game into a movie with perfect fidelity, wouldn’t is that because a movie has to be much shorter, and audiences really don’t tolerate alternate endings. But still, at least a few famous games are practically crying out for major, original, and, perhaps more importantly for Hollywood studios, financially successful film adaptations. Resident Evil, Silent Hill or recently The Last of Us have shown that it is possible, and let’s hope that the times will not return when parodies of great games made by Uwe Boll were made for pennies.

Diablo

Diablo 4, Blizzard Entertainment, 2023

  1. Kind of game: cut and trim
  2. Movie/TV genre: dark fantasy
  3. Possible creators: david cronenberg
  4. Is a film really being made? Possible, but no production details have leaked for 3 years.
  5. How long have you been waiting: over 26 years old

Diablo is one of the immortal titles known even to those who have no idea what Skyrim or Hogwarts Legacy is, and still being played after 26 years. Many add-ons, DLCs, and of course full-fledged sequels have been released since then, and one of the most exciting entries in the cycle should be Diablo 4, which is slated for release in June this year. Because even though the game is all about hacking and slashing endless hordes of hellish creatures, the awesome setting and lore make it extremely fascinating.

A few years ago, Blizzard trademarked Diablo as an online movie/series brand. But for the studio, the shooting of Surveillance may seem more urgent. Plus, Blizzard may still lament the financial flop that Warcraft turned out to be, and maybe a little scared to risk a lot of money again (otherwise you can always hire Uwe Boll, right.. .?).

The perfect director for the task seems to be David Cronenberg, who is returning to acting after a long hiatus. The author of The Naked Lunch or The Fly is not afraid to stage the ugliest things in the world (and even in hell). Gamers would surely be pleased with his vision.even if there were fewer cuts than in the third part.
