• HBO Max premieres its great period bet for this year with The Golden Age .
  • The series is created by Julian Fellowes, who has brought the style of Downton Abbey to late 19th century New York.

Period series have always had a particular charm, probably because they offer viewers a window into a period they have not lived through, with its beautiful clothes and palaces and the romances, adventures and intrigues of another time. That is why it is not surprising that in 2010, with the premiere of Downton Abbey , a true fan revolution took place around it. The new Upstairs and Downstairs had an enviable bill and a hooking plot, by account of its creator, Julian Fellowes.

The director of fiction, who had already been awarded for Gosford Park (2001), a film of a similar inspiration that earned him the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, has managed to specialize in this genre with other productions such as the series Belgravia and Pompeii, or films like Queen Victoria and Vanity Fair.

That is why it is not surprising that his new proposal is born with a seal of quality, even before seeing it. From Tuesday, January 25, we can enjoy on HBO Max the new series signed by Fellowes, The Golden Age . Along with Sonja Warfield, he has created a nine-chapter fiction that invites us to discover New York at the end of the 19th century.

The Gilded Age : Synopsis and Cast

To understand what we are going to find in the new HBO Max series, we must know that the so-called American Golden Age was a period of immense economic change, of great conflict between the old customs and the new systems, and between the enormous fortunes earned and losses. This is what The Gilded Age takes as its backdrop , beginning in 1882 with the move of young Marian Brook (played by Meryl Streep’s youngest daughter, Louisa Jacobson , making her television debut) from rural Pennsylvania to New York City after his father’s death.

The protagonist begins a new life at the home of her wealthy aunts Agnes van Rhijn and Ada Brook, two characters who are one of the great attractions of fiction, as they come to life in the shoes of two heavyweights on television: Christine Baranski ( The Good Wife, The Good Fight ) and Cynthia Nixon ( Sex and the City, And Just Like That ).

Joined by Peggy Scott ( Denée Benton, UnREAL ), an aspiring writer looking for a fresh start, Marian finds herself unexpectedly embroiled in a social war between one of her aunts, daughter of old wealth, and her wildly wealthy neighbors, a ruthless railroad tycoon and his ambitious wife, George ( Morgan Spector, Homeland) and Bertha Russell ( Carrie Coon , The Leftovers, Fargo, The Sinner ) . Exposed to a world on the brink of the Modern Age, will Marian follow the rules already set by society or forge her own path?

Rounding out the cast are Taissa Farmiga, Blake Ritson, Simon Jones, Harry Richardson, Thomas Cocquerel and Jack Gilpin, although there will also be guest appearances by Audra McDonald , Christine Baranski’s partner in The Good Fight .

The golden age : chapters

At the moment there are hardly any details of the different episodes of the series directed by Michael Engler and Salli Richardson-Whitfield, but at least we can provide the titles of the nine chapters. The broadcast rate will be one per week, so we can enjoy the end of the series on March 14.
