Five years have passed since Netflix made it possible to download movies and series on smartphones for offline viewing. This streaming service uses anniversaries to share some data.

5th anniversary of Netflix downloads

According to Netflix, downloads have become one of the most popular mobile features for its subscribers. Users in many countries benefit from this. Downloads are most popular in Mexico, Brazil, and India. In Southeast Asia, the average number of downloads per mobile subscriber per month is 29, which means that people in countries like Thailand and Vietnam download almost every day.

What content is downloading? Since November, Squid Game, Maid, Season 3 of You, and The Guilty have been the most popular content. The first and second are a series and the third is a movie with Jake Gyllenhaal.

Improvements over the years

Of course, Netflix decided to make improvements to its download system in light of the popularity over the years. For example, automatic download debuted in 2018. This system deletes the downloaded episode once you have finished watching it and downloads the next episode once it is connected to a Wi-Fi network.

Most recently, in February 2021, the streaming service offered dedicated downloads. This feature downloads a customized selection of movies and shows so you always have something new to watch according to your tastes.

Finally, partial discharge was introduced in June. Even if you lose Wi-Fi connection or reach the limit of your data plan, you can still watch a partially downloaded movie or episode. Once the connection is reestablished, the download will automatically resume so you can pick up where you left off.
