The former president of the United States was accused of demanding his appearance in “Home Alone 2”, something he denied and assured that his presence made it a success.
There is no doubt that “Mi pobre angelito 2″ (also known as “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” in its original language) has become a Christmas holiday classic, with memorable scenes starring Macaulay Culkin, as well as a brief appearance of Donald Trump, which caused controversy due to statements made by director Chris Columbus.
Despite the passing of the years, Trump’s appearance has been the subject of controversy, to such an extent that the film’s protagonist himself has expressed his support for the elimination of the scene in which the U.S. celebrity appears, especially after the events on Capitol Hill where supporters of the former president protested Joe Biden’s victory.
DIRECTOR ACCUSES TRUMP OF “USING INTIMIDATION” TO APPEAR IN “HOME ALONE 2”?
As part of the 31st anniversary of the film’s release, director Chris Columbus revealed that the appearance of the tycoon, who at the time showed no intention of participating in politics but was a well-known public figure, was due to a condition he set for filming at the Plaza Hotel in New York.
“We agreed to include him in the film, and when we screened it for the first time the strangest thing happened: people applauded when Trump appeared on screen. So I said to my editor, ‘Leave it in the film. It’s a moment for the audience,'” Columbus told Business Insider.
Although the cameo was successful and is one of the most remembered from the blockbuster sequel, the director disagreed that the tycoon had placed his own appearance as a condition for approving access to his access to one of his properties.
“It’s a great moment for the audience, but he did work his way into the film, through intimidation,” sentenced Columbus, responsible for other classics such as “The Bicentennial Man,” the first three Harry Potter installments, the Percy Jackson franchise, among others.
DONALD TRUMP RESPONDS TO CHRIS COLUMBUS
Through his Truth Social platform, the magnate and former U.S. president denied Columbus’ comments and even assured that the film’s production begged him to appear in the film, since his presence would make it more popular.
“Thirty years ago, director Chis Columbus and others begged me to make a cameo in ‘Mi pobre angelito’, they had rented the Plaza Hotel, at the time I was its owner, I was very busy and did not want to do it. They were very nice, but above all, persistent, so I agreed and the rest is history,” Trump began.
For the Republican representative, his presence helped the success of the sequel to the Christmas classic and denied that it was imposed as a condition to allow the recordings.
“That little cameo took off like a rocket and the movie was a hit, and still is, especially as Christmas approaches, people call me when it’s on the air. Now, however, 30 years later, Columbus claimed that it was me who put myself in the movie, nothing could be further from the truth,” he added.
To prove his point, the mogul pointed out that his short involvement “helped the movie be successful” and that’s why they’ve kept it around for nearly three decades. “It’s just another Hollywood guy getting publicity with Trump for himself,” he sentenced.
