Disney+ Outranks Netflix with Over 221 Million Users Worldwide
Disney+ has quickly become a leading streaming platform, offering a vast catalog of movies, series, documentaries, and other multimedia products from renowned studios such as Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star, and National Geographic, among others. The service, owned by The Walt Disney Company, officially launched on November 12, 2019, in the United States and Canada, later expanding to the Netherlands and Spain. It took until the end of 2020 for the platform to finally reach Latin America and the Caribbean, with the exception of Cuba.
As of August 10, 2022, Disney+ has over 221.1 million users worldwide, surpassing its biggest rival, Netflix, for the first time, which remained at 220.67 million users. The platform’s total number of users also includes its sister services, Hulu and ESPN, with 46.2 million and 22.8 million users, respectively. In comparison, Netflix lost 200,000 subscribers in its last report and is expected to lose two million more.
Disney+ launched with the goal of hosting 500 movies and 7,000 episodes of shows or TV series, including four original movies and five TV shows, with The Mandalorian series costing nearly $100 million. With its success, Disney has announced new premium packages for the platform, which will include advertising and require an additional fee. Despite its growing popularity, Disney’s reign in the world of streaming may not last long with the announcement of these new payment plans.
Disney’s streaming venture started in 2015 with the launch of DisneyLife in the UK. However, the service was suspended after the launch of Disney+. The platform continues to add new content regularly, including exclusive releases such as Black Widow and Cruella, among others.
