After a few years of repetitive and unoriginal scripts, lovers of horror stories to keep you awake can finally enjoy films in which creativity, ingenuity and that special factor that makes a film truly frightening abound.
However, it is still a bit difficult to find good movies among so many options that seem to be more of the same, especially on digital platforms, which include more and more titles in their catalog.
This time we have immersed ourselves in Netflix to bring you the list of the 5 best horror movies, so you have no doubts if the plan is to have a good time:
1. The Devil’s Candy (2015)
This work by Australian director Sean Byrne is presented as a follow-up to his debut film, The Loved Ones from 2009. The plot tells the story of Ethan Embry, an artist and heavy metal lover who moves to a town in Texas along with his family.
However, Embry soon begins to act strangely, channeling evil energies belonging to the previous owner of the farm, who murdered his family on the orders of the devil.
They soon discover that the man is wandering around looking for children to offer to his Lord, the devil.
2. The Invitation (2015)
The Invitation combines terror and suspense in such a way that it is difficult to classify it within a single genre.
It tells the story of Eden and Will, a happy couple whose life is destroyed by the tragic death of their son, so they eventually end up separating, and Eden completely disappears without a trace. She’s suddenly back in town with a new husband, and apparently, a new life.
Eden cooks dinner at her house and invites Will and a handful of old friends over for a reunion. However, instead of laughter and happy moments, the dinner turns into a terrifying evening, showing a terrible and macabre side of the hostess.
3. Under the shadow (2016)
If you want to get out of the typical Hollywood ghost movie, Under the Shadow is an excellent option. It is an Iranian horror film that tells the story of Shideh, a woman whose apartment is inhabited by a demon.
As if the fight with the demons were not enough, the plot takes place during the 80s, in the middle of the Iran-Iraq war, so the outside world is not safer either. Shideh faces terrible horrors as she lives in fear of losing her husband to war.
4. The Stranger (2016)
Continuing with the films outside of the Hollywood universe, there is this gem from South Korean director Na Hong-jin, The Stranger.
It tells the story of Jong-goo, a police officer who finds himself investigating the mysterious arrival of an unknown foreigner, who curiously coincides with the appearance of a deadly virus that has taken the lives of the town’s residents. Jong-goo finds himself fighting to protect the village from him, while he tries to save the life of his own daughter.
In this film, thriller, terror, mystery and the supernatural are combined, resulting in a story that will keep you captivated and expectant during every minute.
5. Gerald’s Game (2015)
This terrifying film from director Mike Flanagan stars Jessie, the sweet wife of the successful Gerald. Together they decide to spend a weekend in a house on a lake, with the intention of reviving the flame of the relationship.
Sadly, the couple’s escapade is abruptly disrupted when Gerald, in the midst of a perverted game, dies, leaving Jessie handcuffed to the bed and facing hallucinations and terror she never imagined as she tries to break free of her.
