Known for her role as Blanca in the series “Pose”

Thanks to her masterful role as Blanca in the drama series “Pose,” MJ Rodríguez has been nominated for an Emmy for best actress. A nomination like any other but that becomes history for being the first trans woman to be nominated in this category.

Laverne Cox and Rain Valdez had previously succeeded (the first in up to three occasions for their role “Orange is the new Black” on Netflix), but 73 editions have been necessary for a trans woman to be eligible for the award in one of the main categories.

MJ R, 30-year-old Odriguez, rose to fame for her role as Angel in the revival of the musical Rent, in 2011. A role in which she played an ambiguous gender character who helped her discover her identity and decide to transition.

Since then and until 2016 she only had small appearances in television series such as “Carrie’s Diaries” and “Luke Cage” by Marvel.

In addition, she turned to musical theater, highlighting her role as Audrey in “The Store of Horrors” being the first trans and African American actress to play a leading role in a great theatrical production.

But her great success came from the hand of Ryan Murphy and her series “Pose”, in which she plays the role of Blanca Rodríguez. The series is set in the New York of the 80s and recounts the difficulties with which the LGTBI collective lived at that time.

I want to be an actress who fights for all rights”, has claimed on occasion. The actress carries activism by banner and with her first nomination for Lead Actress she writes a new chapter in the fight for LGTBI rights.
