Shakira spoke in an interview about how she found out that her ex-partner Gerard Piqué was being unfaithful with Clara Chía, at the same time her father, William Mebarak, was hospitalized.
“I was finding out from the press that I had been betrayed while my dad was in the ICU. I thought I wouldn’t survive that much. The man I loved the most in my life, my father, was leaving me when I needed him the most, but I couldn’t talk to him or get the advice from my best friend that I would have needed so much,” the Colombian singer told People en Español.
Shakira talked to the magazine about different topics, from her music and her new life in Miami, to her children and the process of breaking up with Piqué. The singer accepted that she has gone through all kinds of feelings after separating from the soccer player, but that through music she has been able to find herself with her recent hits – “Session 53″ and “Monotonía”-, which managed to position herself among her most listened songs.
“I’ve gone through denial, anger, pain, acceptance, mourning, hope, disappointment, hope again, illusion,” she said. “Music saved my life and gave me wings to fly. It allowed me to be myself, rescued me in the most difficult moments. It connected with who I truly am, when I felt I was losing myself. When I didn’t recognize myself, music was my mirror.”
Now, the Barranquillera is focused on raising her children, Milan and Sasha, as well as rebuilding her life in Miami with friends, since after separating from Piqué she decided to leave Barcelona to avoid further confrontations.
“I have had to dedicate this year to fight to get my children, my parents, my new life outside of Spain. Providing a new home for my children. I try to work or do something fun when the kids are at school or when they are with dad, the rest of the time I am with them and for them, and working on providing a structure that gives them stability. Little by little I’m getting there, rebuilding the nest,” she said.
Shakira also talked about her father and shared that he is currently recovering and is a great example to follow for his resilience.
“His recovery has been very hard and slow, but he is a wonderful man and endearing character for everyone. He always surprises us with his strength. He has overcome covid-19, two accidents, pneumonia, five surgeries. All this at 91 years of age, in less than six months. My dad is the greatest example of resilience, and my mother is by his side day and night, accompanying him,” she added.
The singer separated from the former Barcelona footballer in June 2022, after 12 years of being a couple, and their breakup has been one of the most mediatic in history.
