Cher, 74, apologized to her Twitter followers after sparking a controversy over a recent tweet about George Floyd in the middle of the trial for his murder.

The “Believe” singer took to social media after posting a tweet where she talked about the ongoing trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who is accused of murdering the African-American citizen on May 25, 2020.

The music star was harshly criticized on Twitter Friday night when she said she was watching the murder trial of Derek Chauvin and she wondered if she could have helped George Floyd if she had been in Minneapolis at the time.

“I was talking to Mom and she said, ‘I saw the trial of the cop who killed George Floyd and I cried,’” Cher wrote in a since deleted tweet. “I said, ‘Mom, I know this is going to sound crazy, but maybe if I had been there it could have helped,” she said.

The outrageous video shows Floyd in handcuffs and suffocating for more than nine minutes from the suffocating pressure on the neck of Agent Chauvin’s knee, who arrested him for using a seemingly fake $ 20 bill to buy cigarettes.

The African-American’s death sparked protests against racial injustice and police brutality in the United States and other parts of the world. Prosecutors try to show that the actions of Chauvin, with 19 years of experience in the police force, led to the death of Floyd, who was lying face down in the street saying repeatedly: “I can’t breathe”.

Eric Nelson, the former agent’s defense attorney, claims, however, that Floyd died of illegal drug use and underlying medical problems.

The artist’s tweet sparked immediate debate with many sympathizing with the renowned American singer’s position, while others criticized her for acting as a “white savior” and making Floyd’s death all about her.

As the controversy grew, the singer addressed the controversy by expressing that it bothered her that people thought that she could not have an honest and emotional opinion about the trial.

“I struggled with this tweet because I thought that some people would not understand that a celebrity could not have honest emotions about a suffering human being, even if it is only shown on television. You don’t know what I have done, who I am or what I believe. I can, I have, I willm I will help” Cher wrote.

Hours later, the star returned to Twitter to broadcast a excuses to anyone already bothered with your words.

In her message, she explained that the apology came after talking to a friend about it. “I just got off the phone with my friend Karen. I told him what happened and realized that you can make people angry and hurt if you don’t know everything that is ‘inappropriate’ to say. I know people apologize when they’re in a bind, but I’m really sorry.” Said the Oscar winner on her Twitter account.

Cher has been following the murder trial closely, and has kept tweeting her thoughts about it for the past week. In a tweet posted on March 31, 2021, she praised witnesses who testified about what they saw during the more than 9 minutes that Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck.

Chauvin, who has been out on bail, faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted of the most serious charge against him: murder in the second degree. The other three former police officers involved – Tou Thao, Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Kueng – will be tried separately this year.
