The city of Beijing will require people from low-risk areas of China to test negative for COVID-19 between January 28 and March 15, in a tightening of restrictions for the arrival of the Lunar New Year and the annual meeting of the National People’s Congress.

People wishing to enter the Chinese capital from these areas will also first have to undergo a 14-day health observation period at their homes, Xu Hejian, a spokesman for the Beijing city government, said on Wednesday.

COVID-19 tests will also be conducted on the seventh and fourteenth day of arrival, he told the media.

The tightening of measures comes ahead of the Lunar New Year’s peak travel season, which begins Thursday, and China’s annual parliamentary meeting, which begins on March 5.
