Former United States Vice President Mike Pence criticized on Tuesday the search of the residence of former president Donald Trump (2017-2021) by FBI agents and demanded explanations from the authorities.
“Attorney General (Merrick) Garland must give a full explanation to the American people as to why this action was taken and he must do so immediately,” wrote Pence, who was vice president under Trump, from whom he distanced himself after the assault. to the Capitol in 2021.
The FBI conducted a search for official documents at the former president’s Florida residence in Palm Beach on Monday, Trump himself confirmed.
According to The New York Times, these documents would include, among others, classified material that Trump would have taken with him from the White House instead of having delivered it to the historical archive as required by law.
Pence thus joined dozens of Republican politicians who rejected the unprecedented FBI operation and accused the government of President Joe Biden of carrying out political persecution.
Neither the Justice Department nor the attorney general have yet commented on the raid. The White House, for its part, has said that President Biden was not aware of the raid.
After the news broke, protesters in support of Trump gathered last night outside the Mar-a-Lago club with campaign signs.
It is not the first time that the former president has been accused of breaking or taking official documents. In February, the media published the discovery of several boxes with material and work information that he had in his Florida home.
