Elmau Castle, in Germany’s alpine Bavaria, will host the G7 summit

“We are always open to additional sanctions” against Russia, Biden told reporters. “I will talk to the members of the G7 this week about what we are going to do or not do,” she said. The United States, Canada, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy and Japan make up the Group of Seven (G7) most industrialized countries.

The allies have already applied, in various stages, a battery of economic sanctions against Russian officials, banks, oligarchs and companies in order to weaken that country’s economy and isolate Vladimir Putin’s government internationally. Washington has also banned the issuance of visas for hundreds of people, mostly Russians, but also Belarusians and Ukrainian separatists.

Plans to veto Russian fuel imports

Biden’s remarks come shortly after the European Union (EU) announced plans to ban Russian oil imports and other new measures punishing Moscow for its bloody invasion of Ukraine.

Precisely, the EU launched Wednesday at the headquarters of the European Parliament, Strasbourg, a proposal to gradually block all its oil imports from Russia, although this initiative generates objections from several countries, mainly from Hungary, which maintains good ties with Moscow.
