The United States House of Representatives approved a bill on Wednesday to boost security and combat drug trafficking in the Caribbean. The so-called Caribbean Basin Security Initiative Authorization Act would allocate nearly $75 million annually from 2022 to 2026 to enhance security cooperation with Caribbean nations and combat drug trafficking.
In addition, this initiative supports the reform of the judicial sector and provides technical assistance “to combat corruption, money laundering, financial crimes, extortion and crimes against human rights. This bill is vital to combat drug trafficking, promote good governance and independent justice sectors, and empowering civil society in the Caribbean,” Democratic Congressman Adriano Espaillat said in a statement.
The collaboration of the United States to strengthen the security of the Caribbean will contribute to “stability and development with some of our closest allies,” added Espaillat, of Dominican origin and a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC). The bill also addresses instability caused by natural disasters.
