The CEO of Royal Boskalis, the parent company of the Dutch firm hired to help unblock the container ship blocking the Suez Canal, he warned on Monday that the most difficult is yet to be done.
“The good news is that the stern is clear, but that was what we considered the easy part. The challenge is still the front ”, Peter Berdowski told Dutch public radio.
The container ship Ever Given, which has obstructed this strategic route since Tuesday and penalized world maritime traffic, was redirected this Monday by 80% in the “right direction”, according to the Suez Canal Authority (SCA). But operations continue to bring it fully afloat.
The front of the huge vessel remains “completely blocked,” said the CEO of Royal Boskalis, the parent company of the Dutch company Smit Salvage.
“You don’t have to claim victory so quickly. The fact that it has been turned is the easiest part ”, Berdowski continued. Launching this ship of more than 220,000 tons and a length equivalent to four football fields remains a “challenge,” he insisted.
The Ever Given It has been stuck diagonally in the canal since Tuesday and completely blocks this 300-meter-wide waterway that is one of the busiest in the world.
