‘Sinners’ Leads Oscars 2026 with Record 16 Noms
The Academy Awards for 2026 are heating up. Nominations came out today, January 22, 2026, and Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ grabbed an amazing 16 nods. That’s more than any film ever in Oscar history, beating the old record of 14 held by movies like ‘Titanic’ and ‘La La Land’.
‘Sinners’ is a big hit this year. It mixes music, horror, and drama, and it stars Michael B. Jordan. He got a nod for Best Actor. The film also picked up spots for Best Picture, Best Director for Coogler, and many crafts like cinematography, sound, visual effects, and even original songs.
Right behind it is Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘One Battle After Another’ with 13 nominations. That includes Best Picture, Best Director for Anderson, and strong acting nods. Leonardo DiCaprio is up for Best Actor, while Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn both got Best Supporting Actor spots from the same movie. Teyana Taylor earned her first Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actress.
Three other films tied with 9 nominations each: ‘Frankenstein’, ‘Marty Supreme’, and ‘Sentimental Value’. ‘Sentimental Value’ stood out with double nominations in supporting acting โ Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas for Supporting Actress, plus Stellan Skarsgรฅrd for Supporting Actor. The lead actress from it, Renate Reinsve, is also in the race.
The Best Picture list has 10 films this year. It shows a mix of big stories and different styles:

For Best Actor, besides Jordan and DiCaprio, we have Timothรฉe Chalamet in ‘Marty Supreme’ (his third nod at a young age, tying a record), Ethan Hawke in ‘Blue Moon’, and Wagner Moura in ‘The Secret Agent’.
Best Actress includes Jessie Buckley in ‘Hamnet’, Rose Byrne in ‘If I Had Legs Iโd Kick You’, Kate Hudson in ‘Song Sung Blue’, Renate Reinsve in ‘Sentimental Value’, and Emma Stone in ‘Bugonia’.
The ceremony happens on March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Conan OโBrien is back as host for the second year. It will air live on ABC in the US.
This year brings a new award for Best Achievement in Casting, with nominees including ‘One Battle After Another’, ‘Sinners’, ‘Marty Supreme’, ‘Hamnet’, and ‘The Secret Agent’.
Some big surprises popped up. ‘Wicked: For Good’ got zero nominations after the first film did so well. A few fan favorites missed out too, but that’s part of what makes Oscar season exciting.
