A new study from Stanford University shows that AI is making it tough for young programmers to find jobs. Recent graduates, even from top schools like Stanford, are struggling more than before.

What the Study Found

The research looked at payroll data from millions of workers. It found that jobs for developers aged 22-25 fell almost 20% since late 2022. This started right when tools like ChatGPT became popular.

Entry-level hiring in tech jobs that AI can do dropped 13% more than in other fields, like nursing.

Older programmers (over 26) kept their jobs or even got more. Companies now want experienced people to check AI work.

Why AI is Changing Things

AI tools can write basic code fast and with few mistakes. Many companies say they do not need as many junior coders.

One expert said: “We do not need junior developers anymore. AI can code better than the average new graduate from top schools.”

In some places, like Anthropic, 70-90% of code comes from AI. Teams replace ten juniors with two seniors and AI help.

Real Stories from Graduates

Many new grads feel stressed. One said the campus feels gloomy because jobs are hard to get.

Students from Stanford, UC Berkeley, and others send hundreds of applications but get few offers. Some switch to other work or learn more about AI.

What This Means for the Future

Experts predict up to 50% of entry-level office jobs could go away in five years because of AI.

But not all jobs are at risk. Fields where AI helps people (not replaces them) are doing okay.

If you are studying coding, focus on skills like managing AI or complex problems. The job world is changing fast.
