Google has finalized a historic $32 billion acquisition of the cybersecurity company Wiz, marking its largest purchase to date. The deal, announced by Google’s parent company, Alphabet, strengthens its position in the growing cybersecurity market.
Expanding Google’s Presence in Cloud Security
This all-cash transaction is set to enhance Alphabet’s footprint in cloud computing security, a sector currently dominated by Amazon and Microsoft. Once the acquisition is completed, Wiz will integrate with Google Cloud, boosting its security offerings.
“Today, businesses and governments operating in the cloud seek stronger security solutions and a broader range of cloud computing providers,” said Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google. He emphasized that Google Cloud and Wiz will work together to enhance multi-cloud security.
Wiz, a four-year-old startup based in New York, develops security tools designed to safeguard data stored in remote data centers from cyber threats.
A Second Attempt at Acquiring Wiz
Google has long shown interest in Wiz. The tech giant’s initial $23 billion offer was rejected in July 2024, but it has now returned with a higher bid to secure the acquisition.
Despite the agreement, the deal is expected to face scrutiny from antitrust regulators. While the Trump administration is generally seen as supportive of corporate mergers, it has also expressed concerns about the power of big tech companies.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), led by its new chairman Andrew Ferguson, has pledged to rigorously review mergers and acquisitions. Ferguson has maintained the agency’s authority to block major deals, a stance previously enforced by former chair Lina Khan.
One of the Biggest Tech Deals of the Year
If finalized, the Wiz acquisition will rank among the largest transactions of 2025. The startup, last valued at $12 billion, has backing from top venture capital firms like Sequoia Capital and Thrive Capital.
This purchase surpasses Alphabet’s previous largest acquisition—Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion in 2012. In 2022, Alphabet acquired cybersecurity firm Mandiant for $5.4 billion.
As the deal moves forward, regulatory approval will be the key hurdle. However, if successful, it will significantly bolster Google’s cybersecurity capabilities, positioning the company as a stronger competitor in the cloud security market.
