Are you about to submit an email to collaborators but are afraid you’ve left some spelling or grammar mistakes? Grammar-GPT, an online application based on ChatGPT’s AI, can screen your text. Knowing that computers don’t always rise to the occasion when given such tasks, we tested this spelling and grammar checker for you.
A new kind of spelling and grammar checker
First of all, let’s make it clear that this is a new kind of spell checker. Since it comes from the famous ChatGPT developed by OpenAI, the process is really boosted by machine learning.
In other words, the robot will draw on everything it has read, recorded and synthesized to identify the most accurate correction. This involves context.
For many years, spellcheckers had the annoying tendency to alter the meaning of corrected words. And for good reason: their interpretation capabilities were very limited. Not so with Grammar-GPT: it will catch many (very) subtleties, including those related to spoken language.
The process is devilishly simple, moreover. On the first page, you are prompted to enter your text, and it only takes a few seconds to get a correction. For those of you who are wondering: yes, even if it is not specified, this is also true for French.
So, does artificial intelligence live up to expectations? The answer right now.
Grammar-GPT: an excellent technical corrector, but…
We submitted several texts full of mistakes (spelling, grammar, vocabulary…) to this free online correction platform.
And let’s face it: it works extremely well. We can feel that ChatGPT has revised its lessons, and that it goes far beyond a basic spelling adjustment.
For example, it notices that you write “detonate” instead of “denote”. If you forgot a question mark, he will have no trouble rehabilitating it.
Does this mean the end of the proofreading profession?
Fortunately, no. Companies did not wait for ChatGPT to automate the spelling and grammar review of certain documents. The results were not as good before, but it doesn’t matter… the step has already been taken.
For more complex, more demanding writing, those that must have a particular impact and style, the machine remains limited. Indeed, it cannot restore a “style”, a way of writing. It remains limited to very generic proposals, even if it has access to an immense quantity of sources.
You can therefore try Grammar-GPT to discover this correction tool, while keeping in mind its inability to give personality to texts (or to keep it intact).
Good to know
Beware: even if, as we said, French is supported… sometimes, the correction will be done in English. At this point, we haven’t understood where this mistake comes from, and how to avoid it. Let’s hope that the interface, which is extremely uncluttered, will become more complete for choosing your language.
