We are constantly aware of our impact on the environment, and scientists are thinking of new ways to reduce this impact. One such way to fight climate change is to rely on insect farming for our food.
However, as Wired recently discovered, there may be a small problem with this. As billions of insects are bred each year to be made into tasty treats, more research has been done to see if there is an ethical issue with this.
It turns out that we could be faced with a real moral dilemma if we discover that insects can feel pain and suffer. If so, farming insects could be just as ethically flawed as raising chickens, pigs and fish for food.
It’s unclear whether this will stop insect farming entirely, but it would likely make scientists looking for a solution to the global food crisis look elsewhere.
