A few days ago, Chris Rock premiered his new comedy special Selective outrage and in this one, among other things, the actor also talked about the nasty moment he had at the Oscars last year, when Will Smith slapped him. Although in this new production Chris takes humor and jokes about the event, Netflix has decided to edit the part in which Rock talks about Smith.
The streaming platform announced that this decision was made after realizing that Chris had made a mistake in the last part of his routine.uprightspecifically where the comedian pokes fun at his embarrassing moment with the protagonist of Independence Day.
During his live comedy routine on March 4, Rock told a series of jokes about Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. One of them referred to the beating he received from Smith. The joke centered around an alleged conversation Will allegedly had with the comedian, but was ultimately deleted as it mixed up two of the actor’s films.
“Years ago his wife said he should quit the Oscars, that he shouldn’t be the host because her man wasn’t nominated for the movie. Emancipation, the biggest piece of all time! said Rock during the special. Realizing his mistake, he corrects himself: “No, no. Emancipation. I screwed up the joke.”
Rock’s joke was meant to reference Smith’s 2015 sports biopic, The hidden truth (Concussion), in which the actor played a medical examiner who comes face to face with the NFL while trying to thwart their investigation into how brain degeneration from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) affects players of football. However, Rock referenced the historical drama Emancipationwhich premiered last December.
The joke has now been edited into the version available on the entertainment platform. After the confusion, Chris moved on, this time correctly naming in the feature.
Pinkett Smith was among a group of Hollywood stars who boycotted the 2016 Oscars, which Rock hosted, due to the lack of diversity among the nominees at that year’s ceremony. The controversy then led the academy to put in place new voting rules for its members.
Last year, Chris appeared on stage at the Oscars to present the award for Best Documentary. Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, were seated front row, as Smith was the favorite to win Best Actor Statuette that night for his performance in the biographical feature film. King Richard: a winning family (King Richard).
As Rock entertained the crowd ahead of the award, his attention seemed to be focused on Pinkett Smith, who wore an army green dress and had her head shaved following a diagnosis of alopecia. “Jade, I love you. GI Jeanne 2, I can’t wait to see it, alright?” Chris said. That comment seemed to have had an impact on Smith. When the camera turned to the Smiths to capture their reactions, Will could be seen laughing, but Jada looked deeply angry. The comedian began his awards show and moments later Will came on stage, slapped Chris in the face and returned to his seat.
“Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth,” Smith shouted from the audience. “Wow, mate,” Rock said. “It was a GI Jane joke.” “Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth,” the actor repeated to the stunned gaze of everyone present.
