The man of 84 years old and last name Zhangthe equivalent of $2,900 in one funeral parade for his city in the province of Anhui (this) and the video of the “performance” has gone viral, the newspaper reported today South China Morning Post.
On the morning of the funeral, more than a hundred “mourners” gathered at Zhang’s home for a banquet then started a three hour procession in which the old man walked around the city sitting on a red coffin transported in a truck while greeting surprised passers-by.
The man later explained that he got the idea after buying a coffin in anticipation of his death, because he feels very alone since the death of his wife two years ago and her grown children moved away.
Zhang felt that arranging his funeral while he was alive would entertain him and make him happy, saying it was worth it because he valued him so much.
Despite the support of neighbors, local authorities believe that the funeral procession despised tradition and the deadSo they opened an investigation.
On Chinese social media, however, the old man has garnered sympathy for his positive approach to death: “I admire his attitude towards life and I hope he will reach the age of one hundred”said one netizen, while another felt that “although he is lonely, Zhang knows how to enjoy life.”
