Why UNAM’s CCH Azcapotzalco went into active unemployment

The College of Science and Humanities (CCH) Campuses Azcapotzalco announced that the students have entered active unemployment which will last until March 13. This action was undertaken after a student assembly to review various points that the students had been demanding since February 17 in a petition.

It was on February 28 that the CCH detailed what happened. “The vote was taken to define a resolution by majority. The members decided to hold a active unemployment without courses from 5:55 p.m. on Tuesday, February 28 to 7 a.m. on Monday, March 13,” the College explained.

A meeting was also held on February 24, but during the meeting, a group of hooded youth They appeared in various areas of campus and played acts of provocation towards students, as well as vandalism of property. For this reason, CCH Azcapotzalco has suspended academic activities from Monday, February 28 with the intention of repairing the damaged buildings.

“Around 6:00 p.m. acts of violence were perpetrated in two buildings of the College. No injuries were reported.”

As a result of the aforementioned acts of violence, the students were indignant at the insecurity within the school itself and denounced what is happening at the CCH on social networks. According to information circulating on these platforms, on February 22 an alleged kidnapping of a student was recorded outside the school.

The institution later denied what happened and pointed out that the events were linked to a probable family issue between those involved.

However, the students continued to ask the directors of CCH Azcapotzalco for greater security inside and near the campus, also due to assault case. So far they could not reach an agreement with the authorities, which is why they ended up applying an active strike.

It is not the only campus that has ceased operations, as several branches of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) have chosen to remain unemployed in 2023. Among them is the CCH On, which announced on February 15 a case where they argued that two students at the school were assaulted by parents as they left school grounds.

On the other hand the Faculty of Arts and Design (ADF) of the UNAM officially announced, via its Facebook account, the suspension of academic activities since February 16. The students demanded more security, an efficient medical service, maintenance, care of school materials, attention to complaints of sexual harassment and support for their artists from the start of their careers. “The equipment we need to work is not well maintained, they don’t provide us with the basic equipment. The problem escalated to the point where undergraduates were forced to take drastic action and staged a march on Monday, February 20, from Metro CU to Presbytery of Ciudad Universitariaso that the university authorities settle their claims.
