Fortnite players aren’t impressed with the game’s new Witcher costume, complaining that it’s nearly identical to a previous cosmetic.
Geralt de Riv arrived in Fortnite with the start of Chapter 4 Season 1, and now that we’re halfway through the season, he’s back, with a series of quests that allow players to earn a new costume. “School of the Viper”. . The problem, however, is that alternative cosmetics seem to push the boundaries of the word “new.”
For reference, you can take a look at the original Witcher crossover cosmetic below. Styled in the classic Witcher 3 outfit of Geralt, it’s a pretty good approximation considering Fortnite’s limited visual fidelity compared to CDPR’s RPG.

It’s fair to say that there are some… noticeable similarities between the two skins. So much so that if it weren’t for the text, I think I, a prominent Witcher fan, would have a hard time telling you which one is the original. The only clue beyond the slightly darker palette is the snakeskin texture on some parts of Viper School’s gear, but I initially confused it with another form of chain mail.
I’m not the only one having trouble telling the difference. On Reddit (Opens in a new tab), the comment at the top of a post about the Viper School skin states that “not only is it a color change, it’s a barely noticeable color change. J had to compare the old and the new look side by side.” aside to find out what the difference was. Several other reviews say they still can’t tell the difference between the two, even after pointing out the new colors.
A comment (opens in a new tab) suggests that the Viper armor is meant to look like the original, as fans of the original Geralt design didn’t like to give it up as they progressed through it. The Witcher 3. It was a great way for CDPR to attract Witcher fans, but it’s not so relevant for Fortnite players, especially those who went through a series of complete quests to unlock the new skin.
Still others suggested the alternatives Epic could have opted for. The Wolf (opens in a new tab) and Manticore School armor sets were mentioned. Henry Cavill’s armor (opens in a new tab) from the Netflix show would also have been a possibility. More broadly, it looks like the Viper squad have been drawing a disappointing line all season, with several players suggesting they would have liked to see more variety in recent weeks, and the final reveal was an even bigger disappointment.
