For the new technical director of Cruz Azul, Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti, Mexican football is stagnating and “continues to decline” due to the lack of international competitions, such as the Copa América or Libertadores, as well as the little work that there is a in the basic forces.

In interview for ESPNthe former UNAM Pumas and UANL Tigres strategist regretted that Liga MX clubs no longer compete against Brazilian or Argentinian teams, which made him raise the level of the Tri player a few years ago .

“I think it is stagnating and going down more and more little by little. Because in the competitions we had before, it raised our level a lot. When it started to go to Copa América, Copa Libertadores, it increased a lot. We didn’t go there anymore, but we knew that Mexico was going to win. They prefer to cut off this opportunity, it’s complicated, because it’s a confederation that doesn’t belong to us.”

The 69-year-old DT added that the lower divisions of Mexican football are “working very badly”, as well as pointing out that the number of foreigners in Liga MX is another factor affecting the level. However, one of the main criticisms when he was on the royal bench was that his squad was full of players not born in Mexico.

“I see stagnation because the work is very poorly done below, we are filling up more and more with foreigners. It’s cut, but it’s still not enough. We let it reach 12, all the teams have made an investment of 12, we can’t do it outright, because all the money that you have invested, what do you do, you give the card to the player It has to be reduced and hopefully reach the ideal number, five, but not five plus two. Right now, the ideal would be to say seven, not seven plus two.

Regarding why he didn’t debut with more players at Tigres, Tuca explained that ‘it wasn’t a start and a farewell’ as he preferred to work more with the youngsters of his club.

“Making a debut is very simple, in Tigers 100 players would have made their debut, I hang the medal and it’s not about that. These are not beginnings and farewells. Several times we won up to four goals and there he could put a young man for five minutes, it was not like that. The 11/20 rule was mandatory, I had 11/20 players who almost crying told me ‘Tuca, don’t mess with me'”, he assured.
