LONDON (AP) — Fashion and music stars, including Victoria Beckham, Stormzy and Kate Moss, gathered at a London cathedral on Thursday for a memorial service for late designer Vivienne Westwood, who helped create the outrageous style of punk rock.
Musicians Bob Geldof, Nick Cave and Chrissie Hynde, actresses Elle Fanning, Helena Bonham Carter and Vanessa Redgrave and artist Tracey Emin were some of those who attended mass at Southwark Cathedral to celebrate Westwood’s life, died in December at age 81.
Fashion personalities such as Vogue editor Anna Wintour, UK Vogue editor Edward Enninful and designer Erdem Moralioglu also showed up.
Many wore tartan – the signature fabric of Westwood models – as well as bold outfits for private mass.
In the 1970s, the Westwood store, Sex, on King’s Road in London was an incubator for punk. His ragged clothes fastened with pins, his references to sadomasochism and his provocative shirts became hallmarks of his style.
Westwood has had a long career with parades and museum exhibits, in which she has also championed environmental activism. In 2006, she was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II.
