Earlier this month, CD Projekt RED rolled out a new The Witcher 3 patch for current-gen consoles, and one of the main goals of the update was to improve the game’s ray tracing mode. While the 4.01 update appears to have done so successfully, it made some “puzzling” changes to the game’s 60FPS performance mode.

As analyzed by tech wizards at Digital Foundry, The Witcher 3’s latest patch improves RT mode on Xbox Series X and PS5. However, for some reason the game’s 60FPS mode is now worse off much more than before, also in certain areas.

“Xbox Series X was closer to the 30fps target at launch in its RT mode, and now the level of performance is even more consistent, which means that if 30fps RT is your thing, the Series X delivers a smoother ride.

That should be the end of the story, but that’s not because surprisingly the 60fps performance mode is now significantly slower on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, and it’s unclear why this is happening. , because the images look alike.

Starting with the Series X as an example, our Novigrad test shows a drop of up to eight or nine frames per second in the new patch. For the entire route, on foot or on horseback, the difference in altitude is now impossible to ignore.

Frustratingly, in many areas where 60 fps was possible when the Series X launched, it’s now closer to the 50 fps line.”

Since DF believes the images are no different here, it seems like a bug of some sort, and we hope CDPR fixes these performance mode issues in a future patch. For now though, it might be best to stick with the newly improved RT mode or wait for other changes if 60FPS is an absolute must for you.
