Nintendo’s president said the Switch is in “uncharted territory” and made comments to dispel recent rumors that the console will see fewer games in the near future.
“Nintendo Switch enters its seventh year of sales in March, and we see it as uncharted territory in the history of our dedicated video game platforms,” Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said earlier this week during of a press conference. a new tab), following an overview of the company’s fiscal year ending March 2023.
“Under these circumstances, it’s hard to imagine that hardware sales will continue to grow at the same rate as they have so far,” Furukawa continued. “However, there are titles in development for Nintendo Switch, and new titles will continue to be released in the future.”
At the beginning of January this year, two journalists claimed that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom would be the last major Switch release for the foreseeable future. Furukawa’s comments about new “titles in development” for Switch seem to dispel these recent claims.
“We are seeing both new and multi-system demand for the hardware, so we believe there is still room for sales growth. To that end, we want to maintain a high level of commitment towards the material and create new demand by not only releasing new titles, but also working harder to convey the appeal of existing titles,” Furukawa concluded in this regard.
These comments echo similar sentiments from Doug Bowser, head of Nintendo of America. In early 2022, Bowser said the Switch’s incredibly long lifecycle had fundamentally shattered Nintendo’s conventional attitudes towards consoles, and hinted that the Switch wouldn’t have a successor for some time.
This, along with Furukawa’s new comments, definitely paints a picture of Nintendo betting on the Switch for the foreseeable future. Previously it was rumored that the successor to the Switch could be unveiled as early as next year in 2024, but now that seems incredibly unlikely as Nintendo has future Switch games in the works that the company hasn’t announced.
