The Spanish tennis player could not continue defending the 2022 title, and now he will drop from position two to six in the world ranking
The Spanish tennis player, Rafael Nadal, confessed to feeling “mentally destroyed” after suffering a hip injury that forces him to leave the Australian Open 2023.
“I didn’t want to retire, although I came to consider it. What he was trying to do was play without aggravating the injury. He couldn’t hit the backhand or run. I tried to finish the game by all means,” Nadal said at a press conference.
The tennis player who was defending the title he won last year, and who will now drop from position two to number six in the world rankings, added that it is a very difficult situation to accept.
“Sometimes you get tired of so many injuries. It is a difficult moment and it is time to accept it. I hope it’s nothing serious or that it takes me off the track for a long time, because it would be difficult to go through the work and time necessary for recovery again. I can’t say that I’m not mentally destroyed. I’ve been through that many times already and it’s not easy,” he added sadly.
His injury has to do with “some hip problems” that he has suffered for several years, and which caused him severe discomfort in recent days.
“It is not a problem that I have not been able to play in the past. I don’t know if it’s articular or muscular. It’s time to have an MRI and see what happened,” said Nadal.
“It hurt more when I withdrew in the Wimbledon semifinals, because I could win it. Here I was only in the second round, ”said the player, who insisted that he had“ tried until the end ”because he did not know if he could“ win the match and have options ”.
