A fire that broke out on Monday afternoon a dozen kilometers west of Bordeaux has burned 1,300 hectares and four houses until early this morning, according to the Prefecture, which last night proceeded to evacuate 540 people.
On its Twitter account, the delegation of the Government of Gironde, the department with its capital in Bordeaux, specified that the evacuations were carried out in Saumos, the town where the fire broke out, and in the nearby villages of Saint Hélène.
The Prefecture emphasized that there are “important ground and air resources mobilized” to try to extinguish the fire, which continues to advance.
According to the first elements of the investigation, there were at least three initial sources of the fire, which could suggest that it was caused.
The weather conditions this Monday were particularly favorable for the appearance and spread of fires in the area, with very high temperatures for this time, which reached 37 degrees in Bordeaux.
The Gironde department has been this summer one of the most affected in France by the fires, in particular those that burned in the municipalities of La Teste de Buch and Landiras, which burned nearly 30,000 hectares.
