The Russian authorities that control the Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia today stopped the last reactor that continued to operate in this energy facility due to the persistence of attacks against the plant.
“The reactor has been stopped, at the moment work is being carried out to cool it down,” Renat Karchaa, an adviser to the Russian Rosenergoatom consortium, told the Russian agency Interfax.
According to the specialist, the bloc’s disconnection took place in a safe regime around 4:00 Moscow time (1:00 GMT).
Karchaa previously warned that this step is not an absolute guarantee against a nuclear accident if artillery attacks continue, for which he blamed the Ukrainian Army.
The director general of the International Nuclear Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, warned on Friday about the possibility of an accident after a bombardment that cut the external electrical connection with the plant, the largest of its kind in Europe.
The Russian army has occupied the Zaporizhia plant since March 4, with six reactors and some 10,000 employees, and for a month Ukraine and Russia have accused each other of the attacks around the plant.
